Rocks Announce New Sponsor

The Scottish Rocks professional basketball team have signed two major sponsorship deals for the upcoming 2007/08 British Basketball League (BBL) season.

Glasgow-based Stewart Asset Management Group (“SAM-G”) and the Verve auto dealership will become joint title sponsors of the “SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks”.  Both sponsors will take prominent positions on the Rocks home and away vests and be incorporated into the team logo.

“These two new partnerships are very exciting for us,” said Rocks General Manager Bruce Cook. “Both SAMG and Verve are taking a real interest in assuring that the Rocks continue to progress both on and off the court. They’ve come in at an important time and we truly appreciate their commitment.”

As part of their deal, Verve will be supplying the Rocks with seven branded vehicles that will be easily recognisable around Glasgow as they sport the Rocks flaming basketball logo.  The question many are asking is:

“Will a 6’ 7” basketball player fit inside a VW Beetle?”

While the surprising answer is “yes”, Verve Managing Director Charles Adair points out that they have a full range of VW, Hyundai, Suzuki & SsangYong models available for last season’s BBL Playoff finalists to choose from.  “I’m sure the boys will be very comfortable in their new vehicles, and we’re proud to be providing them.”

Adair added, Verve are delighted to be involved in the sponsorship of the Rocks, it is a fantastic opportunity to work with a team that has great ambition and drive to win; not to mention their energy and enthusiasm to be the best; something that they have in common with ourselves as Verve’s vision is to deliver “best in class customer experience” and to be the number one car and van dealer in Scotland.

“Verve wish the Scottish Rocks the very best for this season and know that they will do us proud. Go Rocks!”

How the deal was done…

The SAMG-Verve-Rocks agreement is a true partnership of passion and belief.  SAMG CEO Brian Stewart took a courtside seat for many of the Rocks nail-biting victories last season and quickly became a loyal fan.  It was this new-found passion for the Rocks that led to the SAMG sponsorship, and Stewart was eager to share his excitement with Adair at Verve, a SAMG group pension client.  Adair quickly saw the opportunity for strong brand exposure in a family friendly environment and the second half of the deal was soon inked.

"We are really pleased to be sponsoring the Scottish Rocks," said Brian Stewart, Chief Executive of Stewart Asset Management Group (SAMG), Scotland's fastest-growing firm of independent financial advisers. "We love the spirit of the team.

"Their drive and determination to win has a lot in common with the kind of entrepreneurial clients whose assets we manage. Besides, a live basketball event with 1,500 people shouting and cheering is a fantastic experience and a brilliant atmosphere, especially in Scotland."

Rocks new player/coach, Sterling Davis, commented on the new sponsorships:

“I’ll be proud to wear the SAMG and Verve logos on my uniform this year because they’re the one’s that make it all possible.  Without their support it would be hard to put a competitive team on the court.  Now we have a real chance to put together a strong squad and compete for the championship again.  I can’t thank them enough.”

Sterling Davis Appointed to Player/Coach

The Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks have announced the signing of Sterling Davis to serve as both a player and Head Coach for the next 2 BBL seasons.

Davis, 29, is a BBL veteran having played 2 seasons with Brighton Bears, one with London Towers, two with Sheffield Sharks, and this past season with the rocks. He has also played professionally with Giessen 46ers in Germany, Oklahoma Storm in America and Aguada montevideo in Uruguay.

The American-born British resident proved to be a key player for the Rocks in 2006/07 and helped guide them to the BBL's playoff championship game in April. He was recently named one of the League's top 10 players by a vote of the coaches of all BBL teams.

The move into the player/coach role begins a transition that Sterling has been considering in recent years.

"This is a great opportunity for me to start moving into the next phase of my career. I've always thought about coaching professionally someday. I feel like I still have some good playing years left in me, but this is a great chance to get started as a coach." he said.

Rocks general Manager Bruce Cook is very pleased with the appointment and had this to say:

"We're really lucky to be bringing Sterling back to the Rocks. he's obviously been a great player, but he's also a great leader who can motivate the team by not only what he says, but what he does. Sterling has always been a hard worker, and like Rob Yanders, he has a natural knack for inspiring others to their best."

The 2 year deal gives a bit of security for both coach and club. Davis commented on his priorities going forward:

"My first goal is to bring back the core of our team from last year. We had a great team chemistry and I really feel that the more of the guys we can bring back the better start we can get off to. From there on it will be a matter of working out an effective game day communication system. It won't be easy, but I'm really looking forward to the challenge."

On the prospect of playing under Davis, co-captain Rob Yanders added his thoughts:

"It's always tough when you lose a good head coach, but at least with Sterling coming in we know what to expect. Over the years he's been both a tough opponent and great team-mate. I like the way he approaches the game and it'll be fun to help him put together a plan to bring some long overdue silverware back to the Rocks."

The Rocks 2007/08 campaign will begin in late September with fixtures to be announced by the end of June. Check back on clyde1.com and clyde2.com for all the Latest Rocks news.

Thorsten Quits
The Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks’ Head Coach Thorsten Leibenath will leave Scotland’s only professional basketball club after a successful season at the helm.  Having guided the Rocks to the League playoff final in just his first season as a head coach, Leibenath will return to his former club in Germany, Giessen 46ers.

The decision to leave the Rocks did not come easy for the 32 year-old German. “This is definitely not a decision based on a desire to leave the Rocks.  I’ve been highly committed to the organisation and in 8 short months I’ve really come to feel a part of the Rocks family.  This is simply a decision to take what could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a head coach in one of Europe’s biggest leagues.”

On the future of the Rocks, Leibenath continued, “The Rocks are an ambitious organisation moving at a fast pace in the right direction.  They have all the necessary tools in place for future success.  They have a strong team in the office, a solid and growing fan base, and a great group of players that will hopefully come back to finish what we started this year. They’ll do very well in the future and I look forward to the time when they compete in Europe.”

Leibenath’s first head coaching job started slow, but steadily gained momentum and nearly finished with a championship.  After opening the season with 3 consecutive losses, Leibenath earned his first head coaching victory on the road in Newcastle by 76-81 over the reigning League champion Newcastle Eagles.  Ironically, Leibenath’s Rocks tenure finished with a loss to the same Newcastle side in the same building as the Rocks were downed by 95-82 Sunday night in the BBL Playoff Final.

Leibenath commented on the final.
“To lose in the final is always disappointing, but what sticks in my mind more than our 2nd place finish is the character that our guys showed in both games this weekend.  Their attitude was great and in the end they left everything they had on the court in both games.  That’s all you can ask for as a coach.

“We had an excellent semi-final win over Guildford and we fought hard in the final, but unfortunately we couldn’t get any momentum going because we just missed too many shots.”

The loss of Leibenath will be nearly as difficult for Rocks fans as the recent loss in Newcastle.  The rookie coach quickly became a fan favourite through his animated sideline presence which often drew the ire of referees.  “But always in control,” he would say with a smile.  Intense on the court, Leibenath was friendly, approachable and always available to fans of all ages who quickly assigned him the affectionate moniker of “Coach T”.

"T is the consummate professional,” said Rocks General Manager, Bruce Cook.  “He is meticulous in his preparation and gives 100% effort for every minute of every game.  Our fans could see that passion in his demeanour and I think that approach quickly gained the respect of our players.  He’ll definitely be hard to replace and I see great things in his future.  We certainly wish him well.”

There will be an odd sense of déjà vu for Rocks fans as last season’s appearance in the BBL Playoff Final was soon followed by the departure of Head Coach Steve Swanson for an enticing opportunity in his native USA.  This price of success is something the Rocks must consider as they move forward in search of another new coach.

Owner & Chairman Ian Reid accepts the challenge.

“We seem to have perfected the art of making finals and losing them, and recruiting coaches and losing them but what is important is the way in which we deal with these losses.

On behalf of all associate with the Rocks, I would like to congratulate Thorsten on his move back to Germany.  We took a calculated risk in recruiting him as he was an assistant coach with solid experience prior to jointing the Rocks, and that does not always translate through to being a successful Head Coach.  He has proved a sound investment for us.  He is an excellent recruiter, a natural leader and most importantly a friend and a fully paid up member of the Rocks family.

What happens next? Coach T has kept us informed of developments along the way but we decided to leave any decisions until after the playoff weekend.  Right now we are considering our options based on three thoughts.  The first is that we want to bring back the core of this year’s team.  The second is that the new coach must be fully committed to the Rocks community programmes and, thirdly, we want to win.”

Although a hard act to follow, the Rocks will look to replace Leibenath in the next 2-3 weeks.

From John MacCalman in Newcastle.

The Eagles defeated the Rocks 95-82 to claim the BBL Championship Play-off Final.

Where did  it go wrong? Fans may argue that wew ere playing agains an 8 man side on the court - the Eagles plus the three officials, but the Rocks have won through games in the past despite the referees' interpretations of the plays.

The Rocks started so well with Rob, Sterling, Moritz, and Maurice all delivering the baskets to build up an 8 point lead with the scoreline 15-7 in favour of the Rocks halfway through  the first period of play then the Eagles found their form and turned that Rocks lead into a 7 point deficit at the end of the first quarter with a killer 17-3 run to take the lead at 30-23.

The second quarter again saw the Rocks start the stronger, and they took the lead at 37-38 off the back of a 9-1 burst midway through the period, but the Eagles again finished the quarter the better team, and a 10-6 tear to close out the first half gave them a slender three-point advantage at 47-44 going into the locker rooms at the half-time interval.

The second half started with a Maurice Hampton three-pointer for the Rocks, which tied the game at 47-47, before an 8-2 tear by the Eagles took the score out to 55-49.  The Rocks continued to trim the deficit, and got within five points at 62-57, but back-to-back three pointers from Shawan Robinson and Andrew Bridge helped the Eagles to a 70 -61 lead.

The final period saw the Rocks again get to within eight points at 75-67, but the Eagles broke the game open with an 11-4 tear to take the score out to 86-71.  The Rocks valiantly attempted to close the deficit, and the closest that they got in the closing stages was at nine points at 86-75.  The Eagles remained strong in the final minutes however, and sealed the victory from the foul-line, bagging 9/14 in the final two minutes of the game.

Overall the Eagles were the stronger team, and the Rocks shooting ability from all aspects seemed to fall apart.

Rocks fans should take some positives out of this defeat.  This young team proved it's worth by reaching the playoff finals. Let us hope that as many of the players as possible find themselves back on the roster next year.

BBL Playoff Semi-Final

Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks 78 (25, 48, 61) (Davis 14, Hampton 12, Joseph/Murray)

Poujoulat Heat Guilford 71 (18, 30, 48) (Dux 23, Martin 23, Guilbert 11)

From John MacCalman in Newcastle

The Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle was the venue for this year's Playoffs.  They have a great scoreboard at one end of the arena which displays leading five individual playes scores for each side.  Unfortunate a large black curtain obscured the line of sight for half the arena - those sitting in the most expensive seats.

When the Eagles beat the Sharks 83 to 73 in the first tie of the Saturday Playoffs, Rocks fans knew that if they beat the Heat a battle royal would ensue on the Sunday against their auld enemy The Eagles.

The main threat from Guildford had been clearly identified as their No 6, Brian Dux, and the Rocks 21 Maurice Hampton had been given the task of shutting him down in the first period of play.  This was a major contribution to the Heat only Racking up 35 points in the first half with Dux held to just 3. Gareth Murray was on fire putting away 2 x 3 pointers and sharing the leading scores of 9 points at half time with Maurice Hampton who racked up the points in addition to his Dux defeating duties.

The first half was a combination of powerful offense and defense coming together at just the right point. To set up an 18 point lead against the BBL Champions at half time seemed too good to be true and it almost was.

It was almost four minutes in to the second half before the Rocks could score again while the Heat cut the 18 point lead down to 11.  At this point the Rocks found their game again and by the end of the third, The Heat had outscored the Rocks by just 5.

Going into the fourth 13 points in front, the Rocks could only throw it away. Containing Brian Dux would be at a price of letting other players reach the basket and the Heat were working round the situation.   Dux managed to recapture some of his form and the Heat came within 3 points of the Rocks at 74-71 with just 31" remaining on the clock when Maurice Hampton went 2/2 at the free throw line followed by Gareth Murray.

This result was revenge for Rocks, after the Heat beat them to the BBL Cup title earlier this season.

The  Rocks earned a spot in the BBL’s Basketball Finals Weekend with a tense and physical quarter-final victory by 83-77 over Plymouth Raiders Sunday night at Braehead Arena.

The Rocks were led by a previous playoff winner, Rob Yanders, who had 21 points. The point guard was backed up by the trio of Julius Joseph, Sterling Davis, and Gareth Murray, who had 12 each. The Raiders were led by Carlton Aaron's 21 points and were hampered by the loss of Gavin Love to an ankle injury in the second quarter.

The Raiders season is now finished while the Rocks advance to face either Guildford Heat or Sheffield Sharks in the BBL Playoff semi-finals in two weeks time at Newcastle’s Metroradio Arena.

Maurice Hampton opened the scoroing for the Rocks followed by Gareth Murray and then a three pointer from Sterling Davis - The Man in the Iron Mask (well not quite, but he did have some protection for a broken nose)  put up a total of 7 points before Plymouth responded . Then the teams could barely be separated in the early exchanges as the game lived up to its billing, and the Rocks finished the first period in front by just one point at 17-16.

The Raiders took their first lead of the game after a pair of Gaylon Moore free-throws opened the second quarter, and there were four successive lead changes before Carlton Aaron put the visitors 24-26 up.

With 4 minutes remaining Plymouth's point guard Gavin Love was carriwed from the court with an ankle injury and did not play again.  Soon afterwards and the Rocks took advantage with a 10-3 burst to lead 34-29. However, Plymouth rallied and went into the half leading 34-35 after netting the last 6 points.

The loss of Gavin Love worked against the Rocks as Plymouth switched to zone defence to cover for his absence and the Rocks had not planned on that tactic from the Raiders.

Julius Joseph snatched the lead back for the hosts with the first basket of the third period and they never trailed again. Then the Rocks kicked in a devastinging blitz of sequential three-pointers from Gareth Murray, Maurice Hampton x 2,  ( one of which was converted to a 4 ponter becasue he was fouled as he took the shot) and Rob Yanders.  Gareth added on another couple then two more single shots from the free throw line for their lead to peak at 53-41 with 5:20 left in the third. Then Plymouth regained the momentum with a 10-2 push to narrow the gap to 55-51 before Moritz Wholers stopped their runn with a 3 point basket.  Going into the fourth there were just 5 points between the teams with the Rocks ahead 60 -55.

An exciting fourth frame saw the Raiders tie the game at 68 as Moore capped a run of 7 unanswered points with 4.30 remaining. However, veterans Rob Yanders and Sterling Davis combined for the Rocks's next 12 points and the game was settled at 82-74 within the last minute.

The Rocks progress to the Basketball Finals Weekend as one of the league's form teams having won eight of their last nine games.

The Rocks were BBL Playoff Champions in 2003 and also made it to the final game last season, coming up just short to Newcastle Eagles.

From David Robertson at Braehead

The Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks had a comfortable victory over Worcester Wolves at Braehead on Sunday night, even though, on paper, this game was meaningless the Rocks head into this Sunday's playoff game against Plymouth Raiders with good momentum on their side. The Rocks top Scorers were Julies Joseph with 26 Points, Hugo Sterk with 16 also Maurice Hampton and Rob Yanders finished the game with 12 points each.

In a tight First Quarter, the Wolves took the lead after two minutes and the teams traded baskets until Julies Joseph fired a 3 pointer from the corner to take the Rocks ahead 13-12 with 4 minutes gone. The Rocks then extended their lead to 21-14 before a run of 6 points by Wolves cut the Rocks lead to 2 points. However, a following fast break move ended with the Rocks Julies Joseph slamming the ball home to restore the Rocks lead. Wolves then cut the lead to 4 points following a Tom Perkes 3 pointer.

In the Second Stanza both teams traded baskets with fewer more than a couple of points in it, which Wolves had the better of the quarter to only be down 45-44 at the interval.

At the start of the 3rd quarter both teams again traded baskets with points from Joseph and Noel keeping the score tight. That was until Rocks point guard Rob Yanders responded with two three pointers which extended the Rocks lead to 51-46. 30 seconds later Julies Joseph added to the Rocks tally with a 3 pointer, which gave the rocks an 8 point cushion with 2mins 30secs gone in the 3rd Quarter. However, the Rocks comfortable lead was short-lived, as the Wolves pulled the score back to 56-53, courtesy of a run of Tom Perkes Two and Three pointers. However, the Rocks responded with a string of scores by Maurice Hampton to make the scores 60-51 to the Rocks with 1.30 left in the 3rd. Forward Chris Anrin gave the Rocks a 68-54 lead with 15secs remaining, however Andy Harper scored a 3 pointer on the buzzer to cut the Rocks lead to 68-57 going into the 4th quarter.

Hugo Sterk orchestrated the perfect start to the last Stanza with 6 personal points to give the Rocks a 75-59 lead with 8mins remaining in the 4th. The two teams went onto exchange baskets coupled with a Julies Joseph 3 pointer from well outside the 3 point line to keep the scoreboard ticking over in the Rocks favour at 82-67 with 5mins remaining. More points from Wolves followed courtesy of baskets from Tom Perkes and Solomon Sheard kept Wolves in with an outside chance of a comeback with 2mins 25secs remaining. However, the Wolves failed to mount a challenge at the end of the quarter with the Rocks winning easily in the end 94-83

The Rocks clinched a home playoff game with a nail-biting 91-90 victory over 2nd place Guildford Heat at Braehead Arena led by Rob Yanders with 24 points while Sterling Davis added 20 and Maurice Hampton 17.

The victory assures the Rocks a 4th place finish and confirms that they will play a quarter-final playoff game at home on Sunday 15th April.  The Rocks opponent will be the BBL’s 5th place team – either Plymouth or Milton Keynes.

This was an outstanding team performance by the Rocks with everybody playing with an intensity of effort that paid the final dividend.  The one point win underlined how every basket counted and each supreme defensive effort produced the final victory.

Both teams adapted well to a dificult situation when the scoreboard system collapsed at the start of the game. This meant there was no 24 second clock on the court and the game time, foul count and score could not be displayed. Frantic behind the scenes work by the Rocks staff arranged for a temporary scoreboard to be rushed from the Kelvin Hall while a relay system was set up to pass critical times to Adrian Coll who could relay this to the cro, wd. By the second half the temporary scoreboard was in place and the timing communication settled into a steady flo, w of information.

Credit to all concerned that the game was allowed to flow.  The referees had the added burden of timekeeping but the lack of 24 second clock affected both sides equally.

Both teams had clearly identified the major threats.. The main threat was from the Heat's Brian Dux  whose killer skills invariably give him the top score credit.

There were ten lead changes in the first quarter and it was no surprise that the teams ended up tied at 24 after a late Dean Williams triple got the Heat back on level terms.

The Heat took the biggest lead of the first half on a Mike Martin basket as they went 27-32 up early in the second. Sterling Davis drew the Rocks level again at 41 before Rob Yanders gave them a slender 51-49 lead going in at the half.

Three minutes into the third quarter the Rocks took the biggest lead of the game at 58-52 on another Yanders score, yet the Heat responded with 11 unanswered points and tied their largest lead at 58-63, before the Rocks rallied to finish the third down just 63-65.

The hosts took the lead for good after a Maurice Hampton triple made it 70-69, and despite drawing level three times the Heat would not lead again. The score was 86-84 with 40 seconds left when Heat talisman Brian Dux missed a pair of crucial free-throws, Rob Yanders subsequently scored with 27 seconds remaining for 88-84. Dux recovered to net a three to make it a one-point game but Hugo Sterk settled it with a trey of his own with 6 seconds left. Former Rock Dan Wardrope netted a three-pointer on the buzzer in vain for the Heat.

There were many outstanding moments in this clash of the Titans. On two occasions stunning feats of acrobatic athleticism kept the ball inbounds to retain possesion for the Rocks.  In the last quarter the Rocks did an excellent job of both stopping the inside shot and protecting against the killer 3 pointers while delivering their own devastating three point attack.

Coach Leibenath in his desire to push the envelope of haranguing match officials came oh so close to receiving a technical foul and Assistant Coach Ross Hutton earned his worth by pulling him back from the brink.  After the game  Thorsten Leibenath said he was pleased with the night:

“This felt like a playoff game both on the court and in the stands.  The crowd really helped us and the guys responded well.

“We played really good team defense in the 2nd half and it came down to our ability to stop Brian Dux on the last 2 possessions.  He’s a great player and you can never shut him down for the whole game, but we didn’t let him beat us down the stretch.

“With this win we now know that we can compete with any team in the League.”

The Rocks have finished strong this season and have now won their final regular season meeting with each of the top 6 teams.  The BBL’s regular season concludes next Sunday as the Rocks face Worcester Wolves at Braehead Arena.

Good work, by the Rocks organisation in proving so much entertainment with the Jump2it final and the primary school cheerleaders for what was close to a record crowd.
